1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data when you use the PepeCoin Network Map service. We are committed to protecting your privacy and complying with applicable data protection laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

2. Data Controller

The data controller for this service is the operator of the PepeCoin Network Map. For questions about this privacy policy, please contact the service administrator.

3. What Data We Collect

3.1. IP Addresses

We collect and process IP addresses in the following circumstances:

Node IP Addresses: We collect IP addresses of PepeCoin network nodes from public blockchain data and seeder services. These are displayed on the map to show network topology and may be stored in our backend for historical statistics (see Section 7.1).
User IP Address (\"Find My Node\"): If you choose to use the "Find My Node" feature and accept the cookie/local storage banner, our server reads your public IP address from the incoming HTTPS request (via the /api/me/ip endpoint) and returns it to your browser. This IP is used only to try to match your node on the map. With your consent, it is stored locally in your browser (localStorage) together with a timestamp for a limited period (see Section 7.2) and is not shared with third parties.

3.2. Geolocation Data

We use third-party geolocation services to determine the approximate geographic location (country, city, coordinates) of IP addresses. This data is used to display nodes on the world map.

3.3. Technical Data

We may collect technical information such as:

Node version information
Connection status
Network statistics

4. How We Use Your Data

We use the collected data for the following purposes:

To display PepeCoin network nodes on an interactive map
To provide network statistics and analytics
To help users locate their own nodes (with consent)
To maintain and improve the service

5. Legal Basis for Processing

We process personal data based on:

Legitimate Interest: Displaying public blockchain network data for network analysis and transparency
Consent: For collecting and storing your personal IP address when using the "Find My Node" feature

6. Third-Party Data Processors

We use the following third-party services that may process IP address information (primarily for node geolocation):

ip-api.com: Used for IP geolocation. Their privacy policy: http://ip-api.com/docs/legal
ipapi.co: Alternative geolocation service (if API key is configured). Their privacy policy: https://ipapi.co/privacy/

These services receive IP addresses from our backend when we look up locations for nodes or related infrastructure. Your personal "Find My Node" IP is not sent directly from your browser to third-party IP detection services; it is read by our server as part of your HTTPS request to /api/me/ip.

7. Data Storage and Retention

7.1. Node Data

Node IP addresses and associated data are stored in our database for historical analysis. This data is retained for up to 1 year, after which it is automatically deleted.

7.2. User IP Address

If you consent to IP collection for the "Find My Node" feature:

Your public IP address is read by our server when you call the /api/me/ip endpoint (as with any web request) and sent back to your browser in the response.
With your consent, your IP address and a timestamp are stored in your browser's localStorage (for example, using keys such as userNodeIP and userNodeIPStoredAt) to make it easier to re-locate your node without asking for your IP each time.
This local storage entry is automatically treated as expired and cleared by the application after a maximum of 7 days, or sooner if you withdraw consent (e.g., by clicking "Decline" in the cookie/local storage banner or clearing your browser storage).
We do not persist your personal IP address in our backend specifically for the "Find My Node" feature beyond normal transient server logs required for operation and security.

8. Your Rights Under GDPR

You have the following rights regarding your personal data:

Right to Access: You can request a copy of your personal data we hold
Right to Rectification: You can request correction of inaccurate data
Right to Erasure: You can request deletion of your personal data
Right to Restrict Processing: You can request limitation of data processing
Right to Data Portability: You can request your data in a machine-readable format
Right to Object: You can object to processing based on legitimate interests
Right to Withdraw Consent: You can withdraw consent at any time

9. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data, including:

Encryption of data in transit (HTTPS)
Secure database storage
Access controls and authentication
Regular security updates

10. Cookies and Local Storage

We do not use third-party tracking cookies. However, we use local storage and similar technologies in your browser to remember your preferences and consent choices. Specifically, we may store:

cookieConsent / cookieConsentDate: To remember whether you have accepted or declined the cookie/local storage banner and when that choice was made.
userNodeIP / userNodeIPStoredAt: Your public IP address and the time it was stored, used only to help you re-locate your node on the map after you have given consent. These entries are automatically treated as expired after a maximum of 7 days and are cleared by the application or when you withdraw consent.
UI and map preferences: Settings that control the look and feel of the interface (for example dark mode or map theme) so that your preferences persist between visits.

You can delete these items at any time via your browser's privacy or site settings, or by clearing site data. If you decline the cookie/local storage banner, we will remove any previously stored IP-related data and will not store your IP for the "Find My Node" feature.

11. Children's Privacy

Our service is not intended for children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last Updated" date at the top indicates when changes were made. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.

14. IP Address Anonymization

For privacy protection, we may anonymize or mask IP addresses in public displays. Full IP addresses are only shown when necessary for network analysis and with appropriate safeguards.
